Ascendant line (the planet rises)
Identity: how you present yourself, your drive, what others notice about you first.
Guide
An astrocartography map projects your birth sky onto the world map. It can be calculated for free in a few seconds; reading it means knowing what its lines represent. This guide gives you the keys to do it yourself.
At the moment of your birth, each planet held a precise place in the sky. At that same moment, somewhere on Earth, it was rising over the horizon; elsewhere it stood at its highest; elsewhere again it was setting, or at its lowest point, beneath your feet. Joining those places draws lines on the world map.
The map does not change your natal chart: it shows where on Earth a part of that chart is brought forward. It is the same sky, seen from other places.
Each planet draws four lines. They are named after the four angles of the natal chart, and each one brings forward an area of life.
Identity: how you present yourself, your drive, what others notice about you first.
Visibility: vocation, social standing, what you are recognised for.
Relationship: encounters, partnerships, what you look for in other people.
Roots: home, family, the need to feel at home.
The planet gives the line its colour; the angle says in which area of life it is expressed. Lines are drawn from the Sun to Pluto. The lunar nodes, Chiron and Lilith have no lines on our maps.
self-assertion, confidence, the wish to shine.
the need for security, emotions, a sense of belonging.
exchange, learning, writing, trade.
affection, taste, pleasure, harmony.
energy, courage, competition, sometimes conflict.
openness, confidence, opportunities to grow.
effort, structure, patience, lasting construction.
change, independence, the unexpected.
imagination, sensitivity, ideals, sometimes confusion.
intensity, deep transformation, power.
First rule: the closer a place is to a line, the more marked the line is there. Its effect fades as you move away; it does not stop sharply at a stroke on the map.
Second rule: a line is read together with the planet as it stands in your chart. A Mars line does not say the same thing if your Mars is already at the heart of your character or in tension with the rest. A line said to be difficult is not a forbidden place, and a line said to be easy is not a promise.
Third rule: look at the crossings. Where two lines cross, two parts of you are brought forward together; that is often where the map speaks most clearly.
The Earth turns by one degree every four minutes, and one degree of longitude is about 111 kilometres at the equator. A quarter of an hour's error in the birth time therefore moves the lines by several hundred kilometres.
If you do not know your birth time, Astro Destiny One uses noon and says so: the course of the lines is then only estimated. Your birth time is often recorded on your full birth certificate.
Astrocartography is a symbolic language. It describes climates and tones; it does not guarantee that a place will make you happy and does not announce any event. A life decision, such as moving, should not rest on a single line.
It is not only for travellers: a place can enter your life through someone who comes from there, a language you learn, or a remote collaboration.
A free map gives you the lines. An Astro Destiny One reading interprets them for you: it groups your places into families, explains why each one stands out in your chart, says what it can be used for (living, working, meeting people, creating, recharging) and names cities that embody it.
Resonance Cartography makes this the heart of the reading and adds what your map changes even if you never move. Signature Cosmography and Quantum Reading devote a chapter to it, and Duo Synergy compares the places of both people.
